Congratulations on completing the August Creative Challenge! Or just reading the prompts for a month…anything you do to feed your creative self counts. From now on we won’t post every day; instead, we’ll send a few weekly creative exercises that we call Messier Moments.
Initially, Moments will fall into the categories of writing, visual art and divergent thinking. They’re meant to be doable in under 10 minutes and sprinkled throughout the week at your own pace, but of course that’s negotiable. If you prefer to block out time on a Sunday afternoon for these, go for it.
After hearing your feedback from August, we’re going to try to make the prompts shorter and less prescriptive. But we’re always open to recommendations on how to structure these emails and for prompt ideas — just send any feedback to hello@messier.co.
Without further ado, here are your Moments:
WRITING: Getting Catty
If a cat could talk to a dog, what would it say? (Bonus: get your Garfield on and cartoon this one)
VISUAL ART: Personal Grafitti
Choose a phrase that resonates with you and draw the words out, in any style (e.g., hip-hop, art deco, flower child). We like the phrase “Here Comes Trouble” because…why not? But you could also just grab a phrase here.
DIVERGENT THINKING: Escape from Burning Man
You’re at Burning Man, trapped by the mud. How do you escape? Set a timer for 3, 5 or 10 minutes and list as many escape ideas as you can.
Share your art and feedback in the Substack chat or on Instagram (please tag us there @getmessier so we’ll see it.) Have fun with these and see you next week!
P.S. In case you missed it, we’ll be offering FREE, personalized creative coaching in the last two weeks of September. You can sign up here: https://forms.gle/5eGP6h4rfPWop54V8
