The August Creativity Challenge starts tomorrow!
Here are some tips for a month of creative inspiration
We can’t wait to get started with you! Throughout the month, we'll be sharing a range of prompts supported by creative sprints, team-engaged prompts, and science-backed exercises. See the bottom of this linked post for an example.
Below are some thoughts on what you can expect from the experience and how to get the most out of it.
Look beyond the surface of a prompt: Although some prompts may seem simple at first, they're designed to stretch our minds in new and unique ways. An exercise that at first feels unfamiliar may lead to unexpected breakthroughs. Also, take note of any resistance you feel towards a certain type of prompt. Is there a reason you might be feeling this way? After you’ve completed a prompt, did your perception of anything change?
Get comfortable with ambiguity: We understand that uncertainty can feel overwhelming. But, this type of creative challenge is the perfect opportunity to try new things — with zero pressure. Some creative exercises will be intentionally vague, which means they can ultimately lead to more interesting personal interpretations and self-discovery. Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way, once said, "The creative process is a process of surrender, not control.” Which leads us to the next point…
Trust your intuition: Remember, creativity goes beyond simply executing the exercises; it's also about how you interpret them. Embrace the uniqueness of your own interpretations, as that's what brings fresh thinking and fun to the experience.
Invite friends: Many of the people we talk with about creativity tell us how important the community dimension is. This will be a richer and more fun experience in a group.
Join in on the conversation: We encourage you to share your experiences and the stories behind your creations. The more we share, the more we can motivate and inspire others with their own creativity. Isaac Newton said, "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." Creativity thrives when we build off other people's ideas.
Above all, this is a time to stay open, experiment, and embrace the messiness and playfulness in the process of creativity.
Let’s get messy :)
