Welcome to the Messier Spark Series where our journey to making creativity a daily practice begins. We created this series of field guides leading up to the launch of the Messier app.
Over the next few weeks, we'll be diving into the art and science of creativity, focusing on a different topic each week. These emails will be short and sweet, with some favorite articles, books, and inspiration on creativity. We'll start with making space for it in our lives.
Making Room for Creativity
Creating space means more than just tidying up a desk. It's about carving out uninterrupted time, finding or designing an inspiring environment, and preparing our minds to welcome new ideas. It also means giving ourselves the internal solitude to allow ideas to come through.
Research shows that forming a specific plan, known as an implementation intention, increases the likelihood of adhering to our plans and maintaining our habits.
To incorporate this approach with a routine, we like to write out the following statement:
I will dedicate 10-15 minutes to [insert creative activity] each day.
Try jotting it it down and place the reminder where you'll see it each morning, such as on your bathroom mirror or next to your bed, to reinforce your commitment.
Tips to Create Your Creative Haven:
Physical Space: Dedicate a corner that sparks creativity. Clear the space from distractions (especially technology, if you can!) Make it your little Creative Nook.
Calendar Space: Block out time in your calendar for undisturbed creative exploration. Sometimes, the reason we don't create regularly is because we don't make the time. Are mornings best for you? Mid-afternoons? Putting a 15-minute creative block in your calendar can make a big difference.
Inspirational Space: Surround yourself with books, art, music, or anything that feels like it allows you to tap into new ideas. We like to create corners that are filled with cork boards and photos, colored markers and sticky notes, and some legos that stimulate the occasional creative build.
This Week's Creative Musing:
“We're affected by our surroundings, and finding the best environment to create a clear channel is personal and to be tested.”
Book Nook:
Each newsletter, we'll recommend a book that enriches your understanding.
